Who We Are

Tabula Rasa (latin for "Clean Slate") was founded in November 2022 by Professors Aaron Windeknecht, Mo Black, John Herrera, and John Roy. The team has nearly half a century of combined experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

John Herrera

Instructor

John started training in BJJ in 2009 at the age of 15. After trying his first BJJ class, he was immediately hooked and knew it would be a lifelong passion. John has competed in various tournaments in his Jiu-Jitsu journey including: IBJJF, Grapplers Quest, NAGA and many more. John received his black belt in 2019 from Marcelo Motta. John is known for his passion for learning, his incredible guard retention and his emphasis on high percentage moves. Students describe John as analytical, engaging, and accommodating to all students and body types.

Mo Black

Instructor

Morgan Black earned her black belt in 2022 and is one of the country's premier Jiu-Jitsu competitors. She began training and competing in 2012 under Marcelo Motta and Carlos Santos at Prime BJJ. Some of her biggest competitive accomplishments include IBJJF gi and nogi Pans medalist, multiple F2W title holder and most recently winning the ADCC Open in Las Vegas. In addition to her many competitive accolades Mo is one of the best kid's BJJ coaches in the country and it remains one of her greatest passions. She has had the opportunity to coach at Colorado College, the Air Force Academy's Jiu-Jitsu club, IBMC, VillaSport as well as Prime BJJ.

Aaron Palos

Instructor

Aaron is one of the most experienced instructors in the state of Colorado and a seasoned competitor with 15 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in tournaments ranging from NAGA to the IBJJF. Starting his training in 2007 at the University of Iowa and the Famed Miletich Fighting Systems, Aaron earned his black belt in late 2016 under the guidance of John Gutta and has been teaching BJJ for the better part of a decade. Aaron has a fun-loving and laid back coaching style that combines rigorous physical training and cutting edge BJJ techniques into a class everyone can enjoy.

John Roy

Instructor

John got his first taste for grappling when he joined the high school wrestling team after his coach told him it would make him better at football. After graduating high school, he trained in MMA. In 2015, John tried his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and was hooked. Since then, John has been training avidly and hasn’t stopped. John has competed in various tournaments including IBJJF, NAGA, Grappling Industries and Fight 2 Win. Every time he travels, he is sure to bring his gi and this has afforded him to train with grapplers such as Marcelo Garcia, Robson Moura, Josh Hinger, Pat Miletich, and Davi Ramos. John’s style is centered around pressure, posture and no-nonsense fundamentals. His coaching is described as analytical, practical and concise.
